Mr. Vernon Davis, 86, of Waycross died early Tuesday morning at Pine Pointe Hospice in Macon, Georgia after a brief illness. He was born in Ware County to the late William Davis and Pearl Harper Davis. Mr. Davis had made Ware County his home for his entire life except for the time he spent in the United States Army. He joined the Army out of high school where he served during Korea and Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. Mr. Davis retired from the Army and returned to Waycross in 1970.
After returning to Waycross he began work for Winn-Dixie in their maintenance department before retiring in 1985. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved to greet people at the door before services. Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Irma Lee Davis, and his brothers and sisters, Banner Davis, Albert Davis, Horace Davis, Sim Davis, Myrtice Johns, Mildred Mathis, Melba Williams, Geneva Banks, and an infant brother.
He is survived by four children, Carlas Davis and his wife Hollie of Brandon, Mississippi, Leon Davis and his wife Shirley of Blackshear, Jennifer Walker of Culloden, Georgia, Rellina Lester and her husband Tom of Culloden, Georgia, five granddaughters, Trista Walker, Mandy Britton, Shannon Sims, Ashley Davis and Kansas Lester; five grandsons, Scott Davis, Brad Davis, Kevin Davis, Chase Lester and Christopher Murray; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
A funeral service will be held Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Little Utah Cemetery in Axson, Georgia. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 – 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
