Mr. Donald James Miles, 78, of Waycross died Friday evening November 30, 2012 at Bayview Nursing Home in Nahunta after an extended illness. He was born in Brantley County to the late John L. Miles, Sr., and Kathleen Hiers Miles and made Waycross and Brantley County his home for all of his life. Mr. Miles was a U.S. Army Veteran and served during the Korean War. He graduated from Abraham Baldwin Agriculture College in Tifton and was a tobacco farmer, raised cattle, harvested turpentine and bailed hay. Mr. Miles was an avid Atlanta Braves fan, a member of the Jerry J’s Coffee Club and a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers John L. “Snooky” Miles, Jr. and Charles C. Miles; a sister Mildred Miles Peterson.
Survivors include his wife Ernestine Miles of Waycross; one son, Doug Miles and his wife June of Waycross; grandchildren Krissy Miles, Tyler Miles, Mallory Odam, Colby Odam, Tonya Odam; niece, Danika Salas; sisters, Deniece Crews and her husband Wesley of Waycross, Margaret Heller of Jacksonville, Florida; sister-in-law, Claude Annie Miles of Waycross; several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday morning at 11 a.m., at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6-8 pm at the Miles-Odum Funeral Home.
